Ninth Anniversary Of India’s Second World Cup Win

On this day nine years ago the MS Dhoni-led Indian Cricket Team won their second World Cup title at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai by defeating Sri Lanka by 6 wickets.

Sri Lanka team won the toss and opted to bat after winning the toss in the finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. Batting first Sri Lankan team scored 274-6 (50) with the help of Mahela Jayawardene century (103*) and small cameos from Tillakaratne Dilshan (33), Kumar Sangakkara (48), Nuwan Kulasekara (32), Thisara Perera (22*), Thilan Samaraweera (21). Yuvraj Singh did not fail to impress in the finals also as he picked 2 wickets. Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh picked 2 and 1 wickets respectively.

Team India openers Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar came to crease and it was Lasith Malinga who brought the much-needed breakthrough by taking the wicket of Virender Sehwag (0) of the 2nd ball of the innings. Gautam Gambhir joined Tendulkar but again it was Malinga who picked up the most crucial wicket of Sachin (18) in the 7th over. Virat Kohli came to crease and joined Gautam and made a crucial partnership of 83 runs for the 3rd wicket as Tillakaratne Dilshan took an unbelievable catch to dismiss Virat Kohli (35).

Gautam Gambhir was playing his role and the captain joined him and both of them took the match far away from Sri Lanka but Gambhir got run out on 97 and failed to make a three-figure score. Yuvraj Singh joined MS Dhoni and took the game to the end. Team India needed 4 runs off 11 balls and Nuwan Kulasekara was bowling and MS Dhoni smashed his helicopter shot for the Six and India won the World Cup after 28 years.

And Ravi Shastri’s commentary “Dhoniiiiii…finishes off in style…a magnificent strike into the crowd…India lift the World Cup after 28 years…the parties start in the dressing room…and it’s an Indian Captain who has been absolutely magnificent in the night of the final.” after that winning shot still echoes.
